Part of the Living Myths — Brazilian Folklore Collection, this tote features my illustration of Matinta Perera, one of the most mysterious figures in the folklore of the Brazilian Amazon.

Her arrival is traditionally announced by a haunting whistle in the night. Depending on where the story is told, Matinta may appear as an older woman who transforms into a bird, a mysterious nocturnal creature, or a woman accompanied by one. In many versions, people promise her tobacco, coffee, or another offering to make the whistling stop—only for a woman to appear the next morning to collect what was promised.

Passed down through generations and shaped by different communities across the Amazon, Matinta has no single fixed form. That mystery is precisely what inspired this interpretation: a character that seems to exist somewhere between woman, bird, sound, forest, and night.
