Part of the Living Myths — Brazilian Folklore Collection, this illustration explores a story where love, longing, nature, and the night sky become inseparable. Like many stories passed through oral tradition, the legend of Naiá and the Vitória-Régia exists in different versions.

This tote features Naiá, an artwork by Mari Salmonson inspired by one of the best-known legends associated with the Brazilian Amazon.

In the story, Naiá is a young Indigenous woman fascinated by Jaci, the Moon. She believes the Moon transforms those she chooses into stars and dreams of joining her in the night sky. One night, Naiá sees the Moon reflected on the water and, trying to reach her, disappears beneath the surface.

Moved by Naiá’s devotion, Jaci transforms her into a different kind of star: the Vitória-Régia, the giant Amazonian water lily—a star of the waters.
