Part of the Living Myths — Brazilian Folklore Collection, this artwork by Mari Salmonson is inspired by Mula sem Cabeça — the Headless Mule, one of the most recognizable supernatural figures in Brazilian folklore.

In the best-known version of the legend, a woman who has a relationship with a priest is cursed to transform at night into a headless mule, galloping through the darkness with flames bursting from where her head should be.

The story has roots in traditions brought to Brazil from the Iberian Peninsula and evolved as it became part of Brazilian oral culture. Beyond its striking imagery, the legend also carries the moral and religious values of the society that told it—particularly ideas surrounding women, sexuality, sin, and punishment.

In this illustration, Mari Salmonson revisits the Mula sem Cabeça not only as a frightening folkloric creature, but as a story that invites us to look at who was punished, who told the story, and what those choices reveal about the culture that carried it forward.
