Part of the Living Myths — Brazilian Folklore Collection, this tote features Alamoa, an artwork by Mari Salmonson inspired by one of the most mysterious legends of Fernando de Noronha, the Brazilian archipelago off the coast of Pernambuco.
According to the island’s oral tradition, Alamoa appears at night as a beautiful woman, often described with long, light-colored hair. She lures unsuspecting men toward the island’s rocky landscape, where her appearance changes and reveals a terrifying supernatural form.
Her legend blends the landscape and isolation of Fernando de Noronha with older stories of enchanted women, seduction, transformation, and danger. In this illustration, Mari Salmonson revisits Alamoa as part of Brazil’s complex tradition of female folkloric figures.
